It might seem indulgent to start pampering your baby with bodywork but there are significant benefits right from birth. Not only is it a great way to bond with baby and spend intentional time together, but it actually helps them sleep, soothes pain and aches from growing, relieves teething pain, reduces stress and anxiety, improves circulation and digestion, and helps regulate hormones and body temperature. On top of all of that, it actually helps YOU feel calm and bonded as well, releasing good endorphins and reducing stress. This is a great activity for both parents to be involved in.
Be sure to choose a quality EDIBLE (in case they get it in their mouth) lotion or oil free from dyes, chemicals, fragrances, and other things that could irritate baby’s delicate skin. Cold-pressed coconut oil is a popular choice. You don’t need pressure, just light, comforting strokes with your thumbs and palms. Work your way around your baby from head to toe, stroking toward the heart to stimulate, and away from the heart to relax. The most important thing to remember is to go clockwise on the tummy.
